This one-night performance features the David Mesquitic Trio with pianist David Mesquitic, bassist Ryan Hagler, and special guest Jeff Hamilton on drums. The trio will pay homage to the legacy of virtuoso Oscar Peterson with some of his iconic recordings, as well as their own arrangements on tunes he recorded over his nearly seven-decade career. ABOUT DAVID MESQUITIC Pianist, composer, and educator David Mesquitic is committed to the intergenerational transfer of the knowledge, history, and traditions of jazz. Mesquitic currently teaches at the University of Wyoming as Lecturer in Jazz Piano, where he also maintains a schedule performing with his trio, adjudicating, and commissioning music throughout the globe. Mesquitic is currently earning his Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was recently awarded the 2022 Eleanor Alexander Stripling Award for Excellence in Jazz Studies. As bandleader, Mesquitic released his first trio album in the summer of 2019 titled “Preamble” and is soon to release his second album as bandleader in Spring 2024. Mesquitic remains active performing, touring, and arranging as leader of his trio and big band, and as a working sideman in both jazz- and commercial-based projects. Mesquitic has had the privilege to study with luminaries Andy LaVerne, Gerald Clayton, Tamir Hendelman, Steven Feifke, and Benny Green. He’s also had the privilege of sharing the stage and/or recording with Postmodern Jukebox, Jeff Hamilton, Aubrey Logan, Steven Feifke, Benny Benack III, Carmen Bradford, Tony Glausi, Clark Sommers, Andre Hayward, James Morrison, Chad LB, Alex Frank, Joe Peri, Michael Sailors, and Christian Wiggs. ABOUT JEFF HAMILTON One of the most highly regarded drummers on the planet, Jeff Hamilton is a dynamic bandleader and top tier jazz musician of incredible pedigree. In his 20s, he cut his teeth playing with Lionel Hampton, Monty Alexander, and Woody Herman. In his 30s, he performed with Ella Fitzgerald, The Count Basie Orchestra, and Rosemary Clooney, and has since toured with Oscar Peterson and the Ray Brown trio, served as co-director of the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and toured the world many times leading the Jeff Hamilton Trio. In addition to his iconic recordings with Ray Brown, Hamilton is featured on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Streisand, Mel Torme, John Pizzarelli, Benny Carter, Lalo Schifrin, George Shearing, Dr. John, Clark Terry, Gene Harris, Toshiko Akioshi, Scott Hamilton, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Keely Smith, Bill Holman, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, and Mark Murphy. Hamilton is a frequent guest of the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany. He also appeared in Natalie Cole’s Great Performances PBS special, Unforgettable, and an Oscar Peterson documentary, Life in the Key of Oscar.
