Temple High School Highlighters Cover

Texas Jazz Society Presents… The Temple Highlighters Jazz Band under the direction of Marcos Duran. This is an ongoing series presented by Parker Jazz Club in conjunction with the Texas Jazz Society to provide opportunities for local area high school programs to perform and raise money for their music programs. 100% of ticket sales go directly back to the high school! All of these concerts are livestreamed for family and friends for free. Please consider helping us support these fine young musicians! Temple High School is home to the oldest jazz curriculum in the state of Texas. Since 1952, jazz education has been part of the Temple ISD fine arts curriculum with dedicated class periods at the high school and middle school levels under the guidance of founding director, Durward Howard. Today, the Temple Highlighters continue to serve as the premier jazz ensemble of Temple High School. They study and perform the big band repertoire of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones, Charles Mingus, Stan Kenton, Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue, and more. The band has received local, state, and national recognition for their performances at the Essentially Ellington Festival and Competition, The Charles Mingus Festival, Savannah (GA) Swing Central, the Basically Basie Competition, and the Jazz Education Network National Conference. In 2022, the Temple Highlighters were winners of the PERFORM WITH MINTZER competition where they hosted Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Bob Mintzer for a clinic and concert. The Temple Highlighters are currently under the direction of Marcos Duran. Mr. Duran was a member of the band from 2001-2003 and is the first alumni to serve as the director of this group. Mr. Duran also serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Jazz Educations Association.
