With the support of the Austin Jazz Society and under the direction of University of Texas at Austin Director of Jazz Studies, Diego Rivera, The Austin Youth Jazz Orchestra (AYJO) helps young jazz musicians adopt a standard of musical excellence and integrity that is consistent with the best traditions of Jazz music. The AYJO encourages students to grow musically, think creatively, develop leadership skills, and enjoy a sense of community and belonging in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Students of the AYJO build an approach to Jazz music that values Swing, The Blues, and Jazz culture & tradition as fundamental principles of the music. Students accomplish this through instructional classes, rehearsals, performance opportunities, and interaction with esteemed faculty-mentors, and guest artists.
